Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. EC30 indicates a water-valve fault that may cause the unit to run water continuously or produce no ice. Stop using the unit for ice production until the fault is resolved to prevent water damage or a flooded cabinet.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. A power cycle can clear EC30 if the cause was a transient low-pressure event. If the solenoid or inlet screen has failed, EC30 will return within one ice cycle after the reset.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: EC30 returns immediately after every power cycle, Water is continuously dripping or running from the unit.

Symptoms You May Notice

Unit produces no ice or ice production has stopped

The Sub-Zero ice maker displays EC30 and halts the ice-making cycle because the control has detected an abnormal water-valve condition.

Water may be running or dripping continuously into the ice maker tray

If the solenoid is stuck open, water flows into the harvest tray beyond the normal fill duration, potentially overflowing or running down the drain continuously.

EC30 code visible on the display panel

The control panel shows EC30, indicating the water-valve fault condition is active and the unit has entered a protective halt.

Water continues to run past the normal 8–10 second fill window

The ice-maker water-inlet solenoid stays open longer than the programmed fill cycle, producing extended water-running sound or an overflowing ice mold.

Possible Causes

1

Failed water-valve solenoid

The solenoid coil or valve mechanism on the inlet valve has failed, preventing it from fully opening or closing on command. The control detects the abnormal state and flags EC30.

2

Low water pressure causing slow fill

If the incoming water supply pressure is too low, the valve takes longer than 15 seconds to deliver the required fill volume, triggering EC30 even with a functional valve.

3

Blocked water inlet screen

Mineral scale or debris has partially blocked the fine mesh screen at the water inlet connection, slowing the fill rate and causing the solenoid to stay energised past the 15-second threshold.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Verify the water supply line and shut-off valve

Locate the water shut-off valve behind or below the ice maker. Confirm it is fully open — a partially closed valve significantly reduces water pressure and fill rate. While you are at the supply line, check that the line is not kinked or restricted anywhere between the valve and the unit.

Sub-Zero undercounter ice makers require a minimum supply pressure to fill within the normal solenoid-on window. A valve that is 75% open instead of fully open can be the entire cause of EC30 in an otherwise healthy unit.

  2. 2

Power cycle the unit and monitor the first fill cycle

Switch the ice maker off at the main power switch for 30 seconds and restore power. The unit will begin a new ice cycle. Watch and listen — you should hear the water valve open and hear water entering the tray within a few seconds. A normal fill cycle is brief (typically under 10 seconds). If the fill takes noticeably longer or EC30 reappears within the first cycle, the valve or inlet screen needs inspection.

EC30 that returns immediately after a power cycle, with confirmed full water pressure, indicates a failed solenoid that requires replacement by a technician.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • EC30 returns within first ice cycle after confirmed full water pressure
  • Audible click from solenoid but no water flow — valve stuck closed
  • Water flows continuously without stopping — valve stuck open
