Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. CLEANING-DUE is a maintenance issue, not a mechanical or food-safety emergency. The unit can continue to be used while you schedule the cleaning cycle, but the ice quality will not improve until cleaning is performed.

Can I reset the code?

No. Biological and mineral buildup cannot be removed by a reset. The cleaning cycle must be run and the bin physically cleaned to restore ice quality.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Ice has a strong chemical or sewage smell — check water supply quality, Visible mold growth (not just slime) inside the bin.

Symptoms You May Notice

Ice has a noticeable off-taste or unpleasant odour

Ice cubes from the bin have a slight musty, stale, or chemical smell and impart an off-flavour to drinks — the classic indicator of microbial or mineral buildup in the water circuit.

Ice cubes appear cloudy or discoloured

Cubes from the Sub-Zero ice maker appear cloudy, yellowish, or grey instead of the expected crystal-clear result, particularly noticeable on the UC-15I clear-ice model.

Visible slime or pink/grey discoloration inside the bin or water tray

Opening the ice maker reveals a film of pink, grey, or greenish slime on the storage bin walls, the water tray, or any wet interior surface.

Ice tastes faintly metallic or produces cloudy cubes

Mineral scale and biofilm accumulation in the reservoir begin affecting the final ice product — a direct sign that the cleaning cycle is overdue.

Possible Causes

1

Overdue cleaning cycle — biofilm and slime buildup

Sub-Zero ice makers require cleaning every six months. A biofilm layer of airborne yeasts, bacteria, and minerals builds up on water-contact surfaces over time if cleaning is skipped.

2

Mineral scale from hard water

Hard water deposits calcium and magnesium scale on the evaporator, water tray, and bin surfaces, creating a rough surface that harbours bacteria and makes ice taste of minerals.

3

Contaminated water supply

If the source water has developed an off-taste from a recent water main event or seasonal change, ice made from it will taste the same even in a perfectly clean ice maker.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Run the ice maker cleaning cycle

Sub-Zero UC-15I and UC-15IP ice makers have a built-in cleaning cycle. Consult the owner's manual for the specific sequence for your model — it typically involves emptying the bin, pressing and holding a combination of buttons to initiate the cleaning cycle, and then adding Sub-Zero-approved ice maker cleaner to the water tray when prompted. The cleaning cycle circulates the cleaning solution through the water circuit and then flushes it.

Use only cleaners approved for Sub-Zero ice makers. Bleach and general-purpose cleaners can damage the internal water circuit components and void service coverage. Sub-Zero recommends its own brand cleaner or nickel-safe ice machine cleaners.

  2. 2

Empty, wash, and sanitise the storage bin

Remove all ice from the storage bin and wash the bin interior with a solution of warm water and a food-safe sanitiser. Rinse thoroughly. Wipe all accessible interior surfaces including the bin walls, bin liner, and any drip channels. Allow to air dry before restarting ice production.

The storage bin is often the source of off-tastes rather than the water circuit itself — ice absorbs odours from the bin walls over time, especially if the unit is installed near a kitchen bin or odour source.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Off-taste persists after two complete cleaning cycles
  • Visible scale buildup on the evaporator that a cleaning cycle cannot remove
  • Bin shows black mold requiring professional sanitisation
