Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. Without a working freezer cabinet thermistor the built-in cannot maintain safe frozen temperatures. Move frozen food out and arrange Factory Certified Service.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. A breaker reset can clear EC07 if the fault was a transient connector issue. A true thermistor failure causes EC07 to return within minutes of the reset.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: EC07 returns immediately after the reset, Freezer temperature rises above 10°F / -12°C.
Symptoms You May Notice
Freezer compartment is noticeably warmer than the setpoint
Frozen foods in the BI-36U or BI-48S feel soft or partially thawed, and ice cream does not hold its shape at the set temperature.
EC07 displayed on the control panel
The Sub-Zero integrated display shows EC07 and may illuminate the service indicator.
Freezer temperature readout shows dashes or an incorrect value
The displayed freezer temperature is wrong, stuck, or replaced with dashes.
Power cycling the unit does not clear the displayed fault
Switching the dedicated breaker off for several minutes and restoring power does not reset the condition — the code returns within seconds or minutes of the unit booting up.
Possible Causes
Failed freezer cabinet thermistor
The NTC thermistor inside the freezer compartment has failed open or shorted.
Requires ProfessionalDamaged thermistor harness
On integrated built-in models the harness routes through the flush cabinet structure; a damaged grommet or tight bend can break the wires.
Requires ProfessionalFailed freezer thermistor input on the control board
The input circuit on the main board for the freezer cabinet thermistor has failed.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Move frozen food to a backup freezer
Transfer frozen goods to a backup freezer or a cooler packed with dry ice immediately. Without a working cabinet thermistor, safe freezer temperatures cannot be guaranteed.
Frozen food begins to degrade at temperatures above 0°F / -18°C. Act promptly.
-
2
Power cycle at the breaker
Switch the dedicated breaker off for 5 minutes, then restore power. If EC07 returns within minutes, the thermistor has failed and service is needed.
On side-by-side BI models both compartments share a single breaker — both will reset.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Freezer cabinet thermistor reads outside expected resistance range
- Visible harness damage at the through-wall grommet or connector
- EC07 appears simultaneously with EC08
