Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Maybe. A door that is not sealing is actively warming the cabinet and increasing energy use, but the unit is not unsafe. Wines in a slightly elevated temperature environment are aging faster than intended. Arrange gasket or hinge service at the earliest opportunity and avoid opening the door more than necessary in the meantime.

Can I reset the code?

No. The alarm is triggered by a physical door condition. Replacing the gasket or realigning the hinge is the fix — resetting the unit will not address the underlying mechanical issue.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Cabinet temperatures remain elevated above 65°F even with the door apparently closed, Gap between door and frame is visible to the eye.

Symptoms You May Notice

An audible chime sounds every few minutes even when the door appears fully closed

The BW-series control detects that the door switch is not fully actuating, triggering the door-ajar alarm on a recurring cycle even though the door looks shut from the outside.

A door-ajar indicator is lit on the display panel

The display shows a door warning indicator that does not clear after firmly pushing the door closed.

Cabinet is running more frequently than normal and temperatures are slightly elevated

Warm air infiltrating through a poorly sealing door causes the unit to run more cooling cycles, which becomes noticeable as warmer-than-expected temperatures develop gradually.

Visible condensation or frost along the door-gasket perimeter

A thin line of moisture or frost appears where the door meets the cabinet — a tell-tale sign the gasket has lost its even seal.

Possible Causes

1

Worn door gasket with lost compression

The rubber door gasket on the Classic BW-series has softened and flattened, no longer creating the airtight seal needed to both keep cold air in and fully depress the door switch.

2

Misaligned hinge causing the door to sit crooked

A hinge that has shifted over years of use lets the door sit slightly askew in the frame, creating a gap on one side and preventing the gasket from making even contact around the full perimeter.

3

Obstruction preventing full door closure

A bottle neck, label, or accessory slightly protruding beyond the shelf edge is physically blocking the door from fully closing.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Inspect shelf contents for any obstruction

Open the door and visually check every shelf and rack to confirm no bottle, label flap, or accessory is extending past the shelf edge far enough to contact the door when closed. Re-push the door firmly and listen for the alarm to cease.

Bottles stored in the top front of a rack are the most common obstruction culprits, particularly magnums and wide-shouldered Burgundy bottles.

  2. 2

Test the gasket seal around the full door perimeter

Perform the dollar-bill drag test at multiple points around the full door perimeter — top, bottom, and both sides — with the unit running. The bill should require firm resistance to pull out at every point tested. Note any location where the bill slides out easily.

Also press the gasket with your fingertip at each corner and along the bottom horizontal. On older Classic units, the gasket should feel slightly soft and springy. If it feels hard and non-compressible, it has aged beyond its sealing service life.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Dollar-bill drag test fails at two or more points around the door perimeter
  • Door gasket is visibly flattened, cracked, or pulling away from the door frame
  • Door sits visibly crooked in the frame suggesting hinge misalignment
