Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
Yes. LED failure has no effect on cooling performance or wine storage temperature. The column continues to maintain both zones at their setpoints normally. This is a convenience and aesthetic issue; service can be scheduled at a convenient time.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. A circuit-breaker reset can clear a stuck driver state temporarily. If the LED driver or strip has physically failed, the lighting will not recover or will fail again quickly after the reset.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Burning smell or visible scorch marks near the LED fixtures, Circuit breaker trips when the column door is opened.
Symptoms You May Notice
One or more sections of the column interior are dark when the door is opened
The LED strip that runs along the column interior — typically illuminating from the top or sides — has gone dark in one segment while adjacent segments remain lit, or the entire interior strip is out.
Interior lighting flickers before going dark
The accent LEDs may flash or dim intermittently before failing permanently, indicating a driver or connection issue rather than a sudden fixture failure.
LED failure develops after six to eight years of operation
On Designer DEC and CL series columns, LED strip failures typically present after six to eight years of daily cycling with door openings.
Interior appears dim or unevenly lit when door is opened in a low-light room
One LED zone remains dark while adjacent zones still illuminate, confirming a driver or strip failure rather than a switch issue.
Possible Causes
Failed LED driver board
The low-voltage driver that converts supply power to the operating voltage of the LED strip has failed after years of thermal cycling. This is the most common failure point on DEC and CL series columns after six or more years.
Requires ProfessionalOpen circuit in the LED strip at a segment junction
The LED strip itself has developed an open circuit at one of the segment solder points, causing part or all of the strip to go dark while the driver continues to function.
Requires ProfessionalLoose or corroded harness connector
The connector between the LED driver and the LED strip inside the column has worked loose or corroded in the cold humid environment.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Perform a circuit-breaker reset
Switch the dedicated circuit breaker off for 60 seconds and restore power. Open the door to check whether the LED strips illuminate normally. A driver that is in a stuck fault state can sometimes recover after a full power cycle.
If the LEDs illuminate correctly immediately after the reset but fail again after a few door openings, the driver is thermally failing under load and needs replacement.

2
Check the door switch actuation
Locate the door switch on the column cabinet frame (typically at the top of the door opening) and confirm it moves freely. Press and release it several times. A stuck switch prevents the column control from activating the accent lighting regardless of whether the driver or strip is functional.
On DEC series columns, there may be separate door switches for the upper and lower zones. Confirm both switches actuate freely if only one zone's lighting is affected.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Lighting remains dark after breaker reset and door switch checks
- Flickering persists through multiple resets
- Column is more than six years old and LEDs have never been serviced
