Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. LIGHT-FAIL is a cosmetic issue that does not affect cooling or food safety. The beverage center can continue to be used normally while you arrange non-urgent service for the lighting.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. A power cycle can clear an LED driver that entered a protection state after a voltage event. If the driver or door switch has physically failed, a reset will not restore the lighting.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Burning smell from the interior of the unit when the door is open, Visible scorch marks near any LED strip or wiring connection.

Symptoms You May Notice

Opening the door shows a dark or very dim interior

The LED accent lighting that normally illuminates the beverage center interior when the door opens is completely out or noticeably dimmer than normal.

Cooling and temperature control continue to operate normally

The unit maintains its setpoint temperatures and all other functions work correctly — only the interior lighting has failed.

Light was flickering intermittently before going out completely

Over several weeks the interior lighting began flickering when the door was opened before eventually failing altogether — a typical pattern for LED driver degradation.

Interior appears dim or unevenly lit when door is opened in a low-light room

One LED zone remains dark while adjacent zones still illuminate, confirming a driver or strip failure rather than a switch issue.

Possible Causes

1

Failed LED driver board

The small driver circuit that regulates power to the LED strips has failed. LED drivers have a finite service life and typically degrade before the LED strips themselves.

2

Failed door switch

The microswitch that detects the door opening and triggers the interior light has failed in the closed position, so the light circuit never receives an activation signal.

Requires Professional
3

Damaged LED strip connection

The connector between the LED strip and the wiring harness has worked loose or corroded, interrupting the power circuit to the LEDs.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Check the door switch by hand

With the beverage center door open, look along the door jamb for the small door-activated switch (usually a small white or black plunger switch near the hinge side). Press and release it by hand. If the light comes on when you release the plunger, the door switch is working and the LED strip or driver is the fault.

If the light does not respond to manually pressing and releasing the door switch, the switch itself has likely failed in the closed position. This is an inexpensive repair.

  2. 2

    Power cycle the unit

Switch the beverage center off at the main control for 30 seconds and restore power. On some Sub-Zero beverage center models, the LED driver can enter a protection state after a voltage spike that a power cycle will clear.

If the lights come on immediately after the power cycle but go out again within a few minutes, the driver is thermally shutting down — indicating driver failure rather than a wiring issue.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Door switch activates correctly but light does not come on
  • Light comes on after power cycle but immediately goes dark again
  • Visible damage or corrosion on LED strip connectors
