Sub-Zero Water Line Freeze Prevention | Leak Avoidance

Sub-Zero water line freeze prevention is a critical concern in kitchens that experience cold ambient temperatures below 55 °F — including garages, unheated additions, vacation homes, and homes during extended winter absences. A frozen and burst water supply line can cause significant water damage before it is detected.

Why This Matters

Sub-Zero models with ice makers and water dispensers use a 1/4-inch supply line that runs from the household water supply to the rear of the unit. This line is vulnerable to freezing if ambient kitchen temperatures drop below 32 °F or if the unit is unpowered in a cold environment. A split line can leak continuously, damaging flooring, cabinetry, and subfloor.

Warning Signs

  • Ice maker stops producing ice without a displayed error code
  • Water dispenser produces no water or only a trickle
  • Visible condensation or frost on the rear water supply line
  • Unexplained water pooling under or behind the unit

Recommended Action Steps

  1. If leaving a home unoccupied in winter, shut off the water supply valve behind the refrigerator and disconnect the supply line at the inlet fitting
  2. Purge the ice maker reservoir by running the dispenser until water flow stops after shutting the supply valve
  3. In garages or cold rooms, insulate the supply line run with foam pipe insulation rated for 1/4-inch tubing
  4. Set the refrigerator temperature to the minimum cold setting if the unit will remain powered in a cold environment — do not power off a Sub-Zero in a space that may freeze
  5. Upon returning, reconnect the supply line, restore the water supply valve, and check under the unit for any signs of leakage before restoring full operation

When to Call a Technician

If the supply line has burst or if the ice maker inlet valve has been damaged by freezing, call 800-222-7820 to schedule repair before restoring water supply.
